How to read a financial projection like an investor

A financial projection is a story told in numbers. Founders tend to read that story as a promise; experienced investors read it as a set of claims to be tested. Learning to read your own projection with that skeptical eye will make your business — and your pitch — far stronger.

Ignore the total, interrogate the drivers

The headline revenue number is the least interesting part of any projection. What matters are the drivers underneath: the growth rate, the conversion rate, the churn, the margins. Change one driver and the whole picture moves. Investors zero in on these, so should you.

Hunt for the hockey stick

Almost every projection shows modest early numbers followed by a sharp upward bend. The question is always: what specifically causes that bend? If the answer is "we start spending on marketing" or "word of mouth kicks in," ask whether the assumed efficiency is realistic. A hockey stick with no mechanism is a red flag.

A projection is only as credible as its least realistic assumption. One indefensible number undermines the entire model.

Check the assumptions against reality

  • Is the growth rate sustainable, or does it require impossible market share?
  • Are the margins consistent with real businesses in this industry?
  • Does customer acquisition cost stay flat while volume explodes? (It rarely does.)

Look at the downside case

A projection that only shows the base and best case is incomplete. What does the business look like if things go 30% worse than planned? A model that still survives its downside is trustworthy. One that only works in the best case is marketing, not planning.

When you build in ProfitLabs, every projection is scored against benchmarks and can be stress-tested with sensitivity analysis — so the weak assumptions surface before an investor, or reality, finds them for you.
